Mexican artisan jewelry can have a number of marks, but from 1979 on, jewelry will be marked with a alphanumeric code indicating the location and maker.
The form will be a letter indicating the registration city, a letter indicating the smith's surname, and a number indicating the order of the individual registration. For example, "TM-181"; would indicate the silversmith was registered in Taxco, had a surname beginning with a "M" and was the 181st "M" name to register in Taxco.
The most common city code letters are T for Taxco, M for Mexico City and G for Guadalajara.
